Every great football club has its pioneers. For the Boulder Tigers, one of the very first was Oscar Hyman. We step back 128 years to celebrate the first Boulder footballer recognised as the Goldfields Football League's Best & Fairest. Originally a South Adelaide footballer, Oscar arrived on the Goldfields around the formation of the Boulder Football Club and quickly established himself as one of the competition's outstanding players. 

The 1898 season was unforgettable.

Contemporary newspaper reports described Oscar's football as a joy to watch, praising his "determination, dash, cleverness, high marking and kicking." In the 1898 Premiership decider, he was named alongside Jim McCormick as one of the match's "bright, particular stars," despite battling injury throughout the game. Such was his reputation that South Adelaide successfully lured him back later that season, where Adelaide newspapers credited his brilliant performance with inspiring victory over Port Adelaide. 

Oscar Hyman was more than a champion footballer. He helped establish the reputation of the Boulder Football Club in its formative years and became the first Tiger to be recognised as the finest footballer in the Goldfields. More than a century later, his name remains etched in Black and Gold history. The first Tiger Best & Fairest. A premiership player. A pioneer.
