Alec Robinson — The First Great Tiger Champion
 
Before the Fletcher Medal. Before the Mitchell Medal. Before generations of Boulder champions filled the club’s honour boards, there was Alec Robinson.
 
At the beginning of the twentieth century, football on the Eastern Goldfields was booming. Players arrived from across Australia, crowds grew, rivalries intensified and the standard of the local competition became among the strongest outside the major capital cities. Into that environment came a footballer who would become one of the first genuine stars of the Boulder City Football Club.
 
Robinson had already experienced football at the highest level, having played with Essendon in Victoria. On the Goldfields, his strength, athleticism and ability as a follower quickly established him among the outstanding players of the competition.
 
But his story became much bigger than individual brilliance.
 
1907 — A Champion Emerges
The year 1907 marked the beginning of one of the most extraordinary periods in Boulder City history.
After seven seasons without a premiership, the Tigers returned to the top.
At the heart of that resurgence was Alec Robinson.
His performances throughout the season earned him recognition as the Goldfields competition’s Best and Fairest footballer of 1907 — an achievement from an era before the league’s premier individual award carried the medal names familiar to later generations.
It was an extraordinary honour in a competition filled with outstanding footballers.
And for Boulder, it was only the beginning.
 
Four in a Row

The 1907 premiership became the first chapter of a dynasty.

Four consecutive premierships.
 
A feat that remains one of the defining achievements of Boulder City’s first 130 years.
 
Robinson was one of the central figures of that remarkable era, and historical records credit him with playing in five Boulder premiership teams during his Goldfields career.
 
He belonged to the generation that transformed Boulder from an ambitious young football club into a recognised power.

But Robinson's reputation travelled far beyond the dust of Coronation Park.

For a Boulder footballer playing thousands of kilometres from home, selection alone was a remarkable recognition of his standing. And Robinson wasn't finished. Selected again ahead of the 1911 Adelaide Carnival, injury prevented him from taking his place. Three years later he returned to interstate football, representing Western Australia at the 1914 Sydney Carnival.

Across two national carnivals, Alec Robinson had become something rare in Boulder's earliest years:
a Tiger recognised among the finest footballers in Australia.

More Than a Footballer
There is another part of Robinson's story that makes his sporting life even more remarkable.
 

• He also represented Western Australia in first-class cricket.

• Footballer.

• State representative.

• Cricketer.

• Premiership Tiger.

At a time when sport was played around work, difficult travel and the realities of life on the Goldfields, Robinson reached elite levels in two major sports. It places him among the outstanding all-round sportsmen associated with Boulder City.

History naturally remembers the champions who came later.
 

• The medal winners.

• The premiership captains.

• The household names.

But every great football club has a generation that establishes what greatness looks like. For Boulder City, Alec Robinson belonged to that generation. He played when the grounds were hard and dusty, interstate travel was an expedition and the young club was still establishing its place in Goldfields football.

Yet during those formative years he helped build something enduring.
